Discover the Flyway All-class Activity and Tour

Exciting changes are coming to the Yolo Demonstration Wetlands! The aging trailers and education facilities located behind the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area Headquarters will be removed and replaced thanks to state funding for the Capital Improvement Project. Work starts this summer and will continue through the fall. The Demonstration Area will not be accessible during this time. In order to offer school programs during construction, Discover the Flyway field trips have been modified and will continue in two new formats. Both options provide Discover the Flyway's hands-on, inquiry-based activities led by Yolo Basin Foundation's experienced staff and docents.

Discover the Flyway in the Wildlife Area field trips meet and take place entirely in the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area. After an all-class introduction to wetlands, students will rotate through three, small group science activities followed by lunch. Teachers have the choice of concluding the field trip after lunch (the "no tour" option) or continuing with a binocular lesson and tour of the Wildlife Area (the "with tour" option). This is an all outdoor program.

Discover the Flyway All-class Activity and Tour field trips meet at the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area Headquarters and start indoors in the conference room. After an all-class introduction to wetlands, the class will participate in a science or social science presentation. The students will then break into three smaller groups to actively explore the selected topic in more detail with a hands-on learning activity (also indoors). After lunch, the field trip continues with a binocular lesson before driving to the Wildlife Area for a tour. With the exception of the tour, this is an all indoor program.
